Tomorrow marks the 8 week point since the earthquake first took place. Because of the severity of the quake and the condition of the land already, the media and government were quick to go in and have a presence. After about 4-5 weeks, you no longer see it on the news and the government/military pulls out and life somewhat resumes to what it was before. Other than, hundreds of thousands are still homeless and so many people are still wondering where their next meal will come from.
They say that the death toll is now slightly over 200,000, but we had a chance to talk to Pastor Jometre last week and he said that there are still so many houses and buildings that have not even been unburied and before anyone even started counting, people were digging holes and burying their loved ones or even burning them because they didn't know what else to do with them. He says you can easily add another 100,000 to any "official" count. He was there when it took place and has pictures of so many areas demolished and people lying everywhere. It is quite sobering.
But, because of your help, GFMI was one of the first groups to get help to the people on the ground. We worked closely with Pastor Jometre as soon as we could make contact. We were able to get him funds within days even though there were no usual methods available. He was able to purchase enough food, water, diesel and cooking fuel that the children didn't go one day without a meal.
He was also able to provide security and safety and even some tents to over 2,000 neighborhood people that were left homeless.
We met up with him in Miami this last week when he was returning to Haiti after a couple weeks of rest and recuperation. We were able to buy clothes, shoes, tents, & toiletries for him to take back with him to give to people at the orphanage, and also gave him additional funds to purchase more food and supplies once he arrived. We would not have been able to do this without your help.
We all want you to know how appreciative we are for the part you have played in helping Haiti. We are not even close to being finished, but you have already made such in difference in so many lives.
We will continue to help rebuild and restore lives and families as the day, weeks and months go by.
We will be uploading pictures soon of what happened and also the help you sent.
God is going to be glorified in Haiti!!

On a personal note:
Latest update - Monday 3/8/2010:
We heard that the embassy called the orphanage and told them to get the girls ready to leave Friday the 19th or Saturday the 20th, so we left for Miami early on the 20th.
Because they had just stopped flying children out using military planes the day before, there were a group that was stopped at the airport because the airport didn't know the process. This caused a delay for about a week.
On Friday the 26th we got a call saying the girls would be leaving Saturday sometime on a charter flight. We were told we could meet them at the government house at 9am Sunday morning. We were there at 8:50am and after about 5 hours of waiting & paperwork, we left WITH them. It was so exciting.
It has been a little over a week now and although there are many changes and adjustments for all, things are going quite smoothly.
We took them to both youth and children's areas at church on Wednesday and then to the children's church (Superkids) area on Sunday. They had a lot of fun both days.
It just reminds us that God can use and has so many different ways to get done what He wants done that we have to remember not to limit Him with our thinking.
Thank you so much for all your prayers.
With God, all things are possible!!
